Forest4climate&People head ‘out west’

Between the 23rd and the 26th April 2022 Sanda Rakotomalala (from ESSA-Forêts) and Julia Jones (from Bangor University) travelled west as far as Ankarafantsika National Park. The purpose was to visit partners from the Forest4Climate&People project, update them on results and what has been achieved while also discussing future potential collaborations. We are starting to look ahead as a team considering the next big challenges we want to tackle, and how best these can be addressed. We are increasingly focusing our attention on Forest Landscape Restoration and filling the knowledge gaps to allow this important natural climate solution to be scaled up and reach its potential in Madagascar.

The PLAE project is doing Forest Landscape Restoration at an impressive scale on the road west from Antananarivo towards Mahajunga
The Betsiboka river is the colour of hot chocolate because of erosion from the high plateau.
The new hydroelectricity plant at Mahintsy is producing much-needed electricity to supply Antananarivo. Land management in the catchment of hydro-dams can affect sediment and therefore the efficiency of operation.
Planet Madagascar run conservation and restoration initiatives around Ankarafantsika National Park. We collaborated on the 'Voices from the Forest' project so it was great to meet in person and discuss how we might work together in future.
